Okay, so you’re going to have to bear with me here if you aren’t familiar with this dish. It isn’t chili like you’re probably thinking. No beans, it has cinnamon and chocolate in it, you eat it over spaghetti…it’s different. It’s really good, but it’s kind of weird.
Ingredients:
2 pounds ground beef
1 large onion, chopped
6 cloves garlic, minced
2 tablespoons vinegar
2 teaspoons ground cumin
1 teaspoon cinnamon
1 teaspoon ground allspice
1 teaspoon ground cloves
2 bay leaves
2 teaspoons salt
2 teaspoons Worcestershire sauce
1/4 cup chili powder
16 oz tomato sauce
1/2 ounce baking chocolate
1//2-2 teaspoons crushed red pepper, depending on how spicy you like things
Directions:
Put the ground beef in a medium sized pot and add water to cover. Bring it to a boil and simmer for half an hour, until it’s fully cooked. Then, add everything else to the pot and mix it up really well. Continue to simmer uncovered for another hour. Remove the bay leaf before serving.
You should take this time to sample it while it’s cooking and see if you want to add anything to it. I always add more garlic, personally, and more cloves, but this is one of those dishes where you should absolutely experiment with it to tune it to your personal taste.
How to eat it? This is amazing on top of chili dogs, but the traditional way to eat it is on top of spaghetti, with chopped white onions and cheddar cheese. And it’s great! Even if it sounds like blasphemy.
