Nothing really special about this except that it tastes great and it’s one of my favorite easy things to make.
If you don’t know, Chinese 5 spice is (I’m quoting wikipedia here) a combination of star anise, cinnamon, cloves, pepper, and fennel seeds. I mix it up with some garlic powder and salt, coat a medium sized (about 3 pounds) pork roast with it until it’s fully coated, and slow roast it for a few hours. When you slow roast it, it comes out really tender, and the heavy coating of spices give it a really nice crust.
5 Spice Pork Roast
1 medium (about 3 pounds) pork roast
2-3 tablespoons chinese five spice powder
1/2 – 1 tablespoon salt
1/2 tablespoon garlic powder
1/2 tablespoon onion powder (totally optional)
Preheat your oven to 325. Thoroughly mix all the dry spices together in a bowl. Put the roast in your roasting pan, take a large pinch of the spice mixture, and pat it in to the meat. Keep doing this until the roast is totally coated in the spice mixture. If you’re doing it right, when you’re out of spices or pretty close, you should be able to pick up the roast and it should feel completely dry as it absorbs the moisture in the meat and sticks to it. This is kind of like the dry rub you get at some barbecue places.
Put it in the oven and roast for about two hours. Temp the meat after an hour just to see where it is, and check every 20 minutes or so until it’s done.
Really good with fried rice, lo mein, or chinese green beans.
