Okay, so…this is a weird gin. I’m going to come back and tinker with the recipe a bit as time goes on, but this is how I made it. There’s a LOT going on here. Also, tonic really opens it up. It’s amazing with fevertree elderflower tonic and a splash of lime.
Also, it doesn’t come out clear at all. It comes out almost the same color as a pale scotch. It’s the juniper berries; they’re what makes it gin, but they add a lot of color.
Ingredients
1 bottle of vodka
2 tbsp juniper berries, crushed in a mortar and pestle
1 tsp coriander
1 tablespoon dried orange peel
6 cardamom pods, cracked
1 tsp clove, lightly crushed
4 allspice berries, lightly crushed
1 bay leaf
1 cinnamon stick
1 star anise pod
1 4 inch strip of grapefruit zest
1 inch ginger, sliced
A jar large enough to hold all of that
Directions
Add the juniper berries and the vodka to the container. Let it steep for twelve hours.
After that, add everything else to the jar and let it steep for another 36 hours.
Strain and drink!
No, seriously, that’s it. That’s how you make gin.
